NSFAS Allowance Payment Dates 2027: When You’ll Be Paid
Approved for funding? Then the next question is the one that really matters: when does the money arrive? NSFAS pays allowances in monthly cycles — here’s how the system works, when to expect your first payment, and why your friend might get paid before you.
How NSFAS allowance payments work
- Monthly cycles, February to November — allowances are paid once a month for 10 months of the academic year
- Your institution must submit your registration data first — NSFAS only pays after your university or TVET college confirms you’re registered
- TVET college students are generally paid directly by NSFAS, usually around the 25th of each month
- University students are paid via their institution after NSFAS disburses to it — typically around the 29th of each month
- First payments land in early February, once registration and banking details are verified
What your allowance covers
| Allowance | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Paid directly to your institution — you never see this money |
| Accommodation | Capped amount depending on institution type and location |
| Living / meal allowance | Monthly, for food and essentials |
| Transport | For students living at home and commuting |
| Books | Annual once-off payment |
| Personal care | Annual amount for toiletries and basics |
Exact amounts are set per cycle — check the current figures on nsfas.org.za, as they change from year to year.
Why your payment might be late
- Registration data not submitted — the #1 cause. If your institution hasn’t sent your registration to NSFAS, no payment runs for you
- Banking details wrong or unverified — keep them updated on myNSFAS; payments go to the account you registered
- Academic progression — continuing students must meet progression requirements to keep receiving allowances
- You’re in a later payment run — payments aren’t simultaneous; your friend being paid first doesn’t mean yours is missing
What to do if your allowance doesn’t arrive
- Check your myNSFAS portal for payment status and messages
- Confirm with your institution’s financial aid office that your registration data was submitted
- Verify your banking details on the portal
- If everything checks out, call NSFAS on 0800 067 327

Do NSFAS allowances get paid during holidays?
The monthly cycle runs February–November (10 payments). There are no allowance payments in December and January.
Can my allowance be paid into someone else’s account?
No — NSFAS pays into the bank account registered in your name on myNSFAS. Keep it updated if you change banks.
What happens to my allowances if I deregister?
Payments stop, and NSFAS may recover amounts already paid for the period after deregistration. Speak to your financial aid office before making changes.
